Bandwidth
In broad casting, bandwidth is the measure, in hertz (Hz) of the spectrum between the highest frequency and the lowest. On the Net, bandwidth is used to refer to the amount of data that can fit through a network connection.

Baud rate
In common usage, baud rate is considered the same as the number of bits per second that a modem can transfer. Bits per second (bps) is a better way of referring to the speed of a modem.

Browser
A software chart which enables you to access the information on the World Wide Web. The two most popular browsers are Netscape Navigator and Microsoft's Internet Explorer.

Cryptography
The creation, manipulation and deciphering of coded messages.

Dial-up connection A connection from your computer to an Internet-connected computer over standard phone lines, using a modem. Dial-up connection types include shell accounts (dialing into a UNIX host) and SLIP and PPP type connections.

Dial-up Networking (DUN)
Microsoft's name for their suite of programs and utilities that allow you to connect your PC to another PC, a LAN and /or the Internet.

Direct connection
A permanent connection between a computer system (either a single CPU or a LAN) and the Internet. This is sometimes called a leased line connection because you are leasing the telephone connection from the phone company. A direct connection is in contrast to a dial-up connection.

Domain Name Registration
To get a domain name for your company, you need to register the chosen name with an apex body that allocates all domain names. This process will be taken care of by the Internet Service Provider (MTNL).

DNS (Domain Name Service)
A database used for resolving hostnames and IP addresses. Allow user's machines to query the database for domain names so that users don't have to enter numeric IP addresses.

E-mail Short for electronic mail.

Encryption
The act of scrambling information so that only those with access to certain key information can unscramble (or decrypt) it.

Firewall
A computer that acts as a security gateway between a local network and a larger network. The firewall monitors and restricts data traffic between networks according to various security criteria specified by the systems administrator/computer security person.

Gateway
A computer transfers date between ordinarily incompatible applications or networks. Not to be confused with a router that transfers data between compatible networks.

Gopher
A menu-driven system for searching on-line information resources on the Internet.

Hacker
A computer enthusiast who enjoys pushing the limits of computer hardware and software, their own knowledge. The original pioneers of the personal computer were hackers.

Home Page
The document that's displayed when you first open a Web browser. Also, commonly used to refer to the first document you come to in a collection of documents on a Web site.

Host
A computer that users can log in to in order to run programs and access services.

Hosting Service Provider A company that puts up your web site on its server and maintains it.
