HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language)
A system for making (or tagging) the various parts of a Web document to tell the browser software how to display the document's text, links, graphics and linked media.

HTTP (Hyper Text Transport Protocol)
The communications protocol used to transfer documents from servers to clients over the World Wide Web.

HTTP/HTML Link
Used to refer to a connection between web sites, or different web pages of the same website, or web pages on different web sites.

Internet commerce
In which complete business transactions - including payments are conducted through the Internet.

IP address
The 32-bit addressing standard used by the Internet Protocol. Every resource on the Net has a unique IP address, represented in dotted decimal notation (e.g. 198.72.13.150). Besides this numerical form, there's also a corresponding domain name in the form subnetwork.network.domain (e.g. www.umedia.com).

ISP (Internet ServiceProvider)
A company that provides Internet access and other Net-related services.

Mailing Lists
A discussion platform in which any member belonging to a list can send messages through e-mail to all other members. Today, on the Internet, mailing lists are available on thousands of subjects. These are usually free.

Modem
A device which connects your PC to the internet over normal phone lines.

Multimedia
A combination of many media - text, graphics,audio and video.

Net Commonly used term for the Internet.

Newsgroups
Another method of discussions on the Internet in which members of a group (called newsgroup) post questions to and receive answers from other members.

Network Interface Card (NIC)
Hardware (e.g. an Ethernet card) that connects your computer to a local area network.

NNTP (Network News Transport Protocol)
The protocol that defines how Usenet news traffic will be posted, distributed, retrieved, etc.

Off-line The state of not being connected to the Internet.

On-line The state of being connected to the Internet.

On-line directories
Internet directories similar to the Yellow Pages. These directories are available on a number of subjects. The listings in most directories are free.

Password
A secret code that can be used by an Internet user to perform specific activities - such as connecting to the Internet , accessing a web site that is only for members, etc.

POTS (plain old telephone system)
What you are using when you pick up your telephone. Brought to you by Ma Bell and her babies.

PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) A type of Internet connection in which a computer can use a phone line and a modem to connect to the Internet (without having to connect to a host). PPP connections are rented from a local Internet Service Provider.

Search Engine
Servers used to search for information on the Internet in an easy and efficient manner.

Server
A computer that offers various services (document viewing, file transfer,etc.0 to other computers (called clients over a network).

TCP/IP
(Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) A suite of network communications protocols used for specifying how packets of date will be constructed, transferred, error corrected, etc. Window machine wishing to connect to the Internet need to use a TCP/IP protocol stack. The Macintosh uses MacTCP, a proprietary software package.

Topology The layout of a computer network.

User name A name that represents the user when using the Internet.

URL (Universal Resource Locator)
Address which uniquely identifies a page on www.

Veronica A service that allows you to search Gopherspace.

WAN (wide area network)
A network of computer that is connected over a distance, usually by conventional phone service. A WAN is the opposite of a LAN, which is connected through local wiring.

Web Developer A company that designs and develops web sites.

World Wide Web
The name given to the graphical interface through which you can access the information contained on the Internet in a much more efficient manner.

Web document An HTML document that is browseable on the World Wide Web.

Web page An HTML document that is accessible on the Web.

Yellow pages
Internet directories that allows you to search for organizations, business and services on the Net.
